EDUCATION

Georgia-Pacific and M. Agnes Jones Elementary School celebrate over a decade of partnership.

Since its inception, the Georgia-Pacific Foundation has recognized the value of education as one of the most important and essential building blocks of a strong, thriving community. We believe that creating, supporting and nurturing worthy educational projects are paramount to achieving our philosophical goals. The foundation continually seeks to invest in innovative and results-driven educational initiatives that we feel will make a measurable difference in our communities.

We're proud to be an integral part of a wide array of community-based educational programs around the world. We help youth transition from school to the workforce as well as provide employees with job readiness training. The scholarships and technical programs that we fund give students and workers the skills necessary to succeed in today's workplace.

M. Agnes Jones Elementary School

One of the foundation's ongoing educational initiatives that makes a genuine difference is occurring at M. Agnes Jones, an urban elementary school in Atlanta, Ga.

The foundation has funded improvements that have dramatically enhanced the quality of the school's learning environment, causing a measurable, positive impact in students' performance. We outfitted the school's computer lab with the latest technology and installed an outdoor learning center with vegetable gardens, a butterfly garden, nature trails and an amphitheatre so students can get the full benefit of hands-on field education.

In addition to funding, as part of our ServiceForce program more than 125 Georgia-Pacific employees volunteer during their lunch hour to tutor and mentor at the school.

Junior Achievement

One of the Foundation's core philosophical views is the belief that self-sufficiency and economic empowerment are crucial to the well-being of any community. A key priority for Georgia-Pacific is helping educate youth about the fundamental benefits of the free enterprise system. We've partnered with Junior Achievement, a leading organization that teaches economic principles to over 7 million young people worldwide. Together, we've helped elementary, middle and high school students in communities near GP's U.S. facilities learn how to develop their career, financial, and entrepreneurial skills.
